Evening events 2018

For delegates on the full XML Summer School package, or the 3-day or 2-day courses, we have included a number of social events in the evening so that people have time to relax and experience some of the delights Oxford has to offer.

The social events provide the ideal platform for networking with your fellow delegates or extracting information from the speakers on a one-to-one basis. Many past delegates will tell you that the networking and learning experiences outside the lecture room are extremely valuable as they complement the teaching inside.

The college bar will be open in the evenings, usually between 6pm and 10pm. Everyone is welcome to sit and chat, whether you enjoy a beer or don’t drink alcohol at all.

This year the events include:

  • Sunday 9th: A welcome reception in the historic Old Dining hall in the Front Quad at St Edmund Hall, starting at 7pm.
  • Monday 10th: punting down the River Cherwell, followed by dinner at the college. Bring warm, waterproof clothing in case the weather is cool or it rains. Meet at the Porter’s Lodge at 5:45pm, we’ll walk to the punting (6pm – 7pm). Dinner will be slightly later than usual, at 7:30pm.
  • Tuesday 11th: College dinner at 7pm followed by a tour of some historic sites and a number of Oxford’s historic public houses (a.k.a. a pub crawl). As with the college bar, there is no need to consume any alcohol on the pub crawl, or indeed to drink anything at all.
  • Wednesday 12th: Dinner and the XML debate at the Oxford Union. The debate and dinner are included with the registration for anyone attending the full XML Summer School, XSLT and XQuery, or Hands-on digital publishing with XSLT courses.
Entry to the debate and dinner at the Oxford Union is by your XML Summer School name badge. We will be leaving as a group from the front Quad at 6:45pm, to arrive at the Oxford Union for 7pm.
  • Thursday 13th: Dress up for a formal candlelit dinner in the college. We will take a group photo at 6:45pm in the Front Quad and sit down for dinner at 7pm. If you wish to bring a spouse or colleague who is not a delegate at the Summer School, we do have a limited number of dinner tickets available for purchase.
